Inprocess Awarded a Project to Deliver an Operator Training Simulator for Woodfibre LNG

We are excited to announce that Inprocess has been awarded a project to deliver a Direct-Connect Operator Training Simulator (OTS) for Woodfibre LNG in Canada.

Woodfibre LNG is pioneering as the world’s first LNG export facility committed to achieving net zero emissions by 2027. The facility is designed to produce 2.1 million tons of liquefied natural gas (LNG) annually for overseas markets. This project is particularly significant as Canadian natural gas is highly sought after in countries where coal remains a primary fuel source. Transitioning from coal to natural gas can halve greenhouse gas emissions and eliminate 99 percent of particulate matter.

The Woodfibre LNG Plant will receive feed gas from the Fortis BC gas pipeline, undergoing several pre-treatment processes before liquefaction. After that, the gas will be liquefied using propane as pre-cooler and a mixed refrigerant for liquefaction, before being stored in floating LNG tanks and exported via a ship loading platform. Boil-off gases will be recovered and utilized as fuel or reinjected for reprocessing.

The proposed Direct-Connect OTS will feature a high-fidelity dynamic process model with Honeywell UniSim® Design and a replica of the Yokogawa’s Centum VP Distributed Control System (DCS) that will mimic the operational plant’s configuration. This setup ensures an authentic training experience, enhancing operator understanding. Supported by our proprietary Inprocess Infrastructure Suite (IIS), this solution guarantees model portability, applicability to engineering tasks and maintainability, ensuring the sustainability of the OTS.

The main benefits for Woodfibre LNG include smoother and more efficient startups and shutdowns, accelerated and comprehensive development of operator skills and certification, reduced overtime costs, and improved safety incident prevention. This Direct-OTS will prepare operators for uncommon situations that may arise in the actual plant. Additionally, the simulator will help maintain operator competency, refresh crucial skills, and validate control philosophy.

With such a Direct-OTS, workforce flexibility and capability will be enhanced while instilling a heightened level of confidence among operators in managing the LNG plant’s operations safely, reliably, and efficiently.

We sincerely thank Woodfibre LNG for their trust in Inprocess with this meaningful and pioneering project. We are enthusiastic about this partnership and are committed to delivering excellence at every step, sharing our passion for process simulation, and maximizing the benefits for our client.

About Woodfibre LNG:

The Woodfibre LNG Project is a liquefied natural gas (LNG) facility that will produce 2.1 million tonnes of LNG for export annually, being built near the town of Squamish on the traditional territory of the Swx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation). The Woodfibre LNG Project is owned by Woodfibre LNG Limited Partnership, owned 70 per cent by Pacific Energy Corporation (Canada) Limited and 30 per cent by Enbridge Inc. Woodfibre LNG is the first industrial project in Canada to recognize a non-treaty Indigenous government, Squamish Nation, as a full environmental regulator. The Woodfibre LNG facility will be the world’s first net zero LNG facility when it is completed in 2027.
